Man sets himself on fire in Brandon

A Brandon man was taken to a hospital this morning after he poured gasoline on his body and set himself on fire, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
Ronald Mercer, 66, of 606 Larrie Ellen Way, had attempted to kill himself, deputies said.
A neighbor heard screams and saw flames coming from the backyard of Mercer's home and ran over to help, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. Before calling 911, the neighbor told Mercer to get on the ground and roll around to extinguish the flames, Carter said.
Mercer was taken by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital. His condition was not known on late today.
