Carrollwood pastor charged with drunken driving

TAMPA - The senior pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Carrollwood was arrested early this morning, charged with drunken driving, reports say.

John Stephen Hillmer, 57, of 10505 Sago Road, Tampa, was pulled over by Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies at 12:46 a.m. at the corner of North Dale Mabry Highway and Hudson Lane, according to a booking report.

The deputy said in an arrest affidavit that he saw Hillmer's Toyota moving erratically. It drifted to the right lane twice and jerked back to the left, he said. The deputy also said the vehicle was traveling at 58 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Hillmer appeared to speak "with thick speech and emitted the odor of an alcoholic beverage," the report said.

Hillmer was given three breath tests and measured a .146, .123 and .134 blood-alcohol level. In Florida, a driver is presumed impaired with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher.

Hillmer remained in the Orient Road Jail this morning. Bail was set at $500.

Grace Lutheran Church is at 3714 W. Linebaugh Ave.
