Please Hispanic community, let's not play the identity politics game over Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination. She should be confirmed or rejected on the merits of her record, not ethnic background.
My Hispanic grandfather arrived in the United States in the late 1800s and was a janitor. He banned the Spanish language in his household saying, "We are Americans."
My father, born in 1918, became a nuclear scientist during WWII. He worked on the Manhattan Project making a big bomb. I am a retired Air Force colonel. My brother is an attorney.
We made it without any help from affirmative action, government handouts or references to our father/grandfather Joseph Lopez Blanco.
Be proud. Be American, not hyphen-Americans.
