TAMPA - Police noticed the 2005 Dodge Magnum cruising the streets of Ybor City early Saturday, and when they tried to pull the car over on a routine traffic infraction, it sped off.
A short time later, police spotted the car again and hemmed it in. They eventually arrested the passenger, a nine-time convicted felon, as he sat in the car with a loaded Glock .45-caliber pistol tucked into the seat next to him.
The arrest happened shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday at Republica de Cuba and Seventh avenues, police said.
The driver, Elisha Bright, 25, of 7225 11th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, was charged with driving with a suspended license and attempting to flee a police officer.
The passenger, identified as D'Angelo M. Battis, 25, of 5401 First Ave. S., Apartment 9A, St. Petersburg, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of marijuana.
Battis told officers the gun was his and that he bought it on the street for personal protection. He remained in the Orient Road Jail this morning. Bail was set at $34,500.
Bright was released from jail over the weekend after posting $2,250 bail.
