Everything went wrong in this bank robbery, cops say

Nothing went right at this bank robbery.

According to Bradenton police, a 66-year-old Sebring man was so obviously getting ready to try to rob a bank about 1:30 p.m. today, he was locked out before the robbery could really get started.

Then he was chased by police, who eventually shot him. His wounds are considered non-life threatening.

Police say the incident happened like this:

Bank tellers saw a man putting on a mask and gloves outside the front doors of the Gateway Bank of Southwest Florida on Manatee Avenue West.

Bradenton police spokesman J.J. Lewis said the robber was known as the "pot-bellied bandit" due to his large stomach. He was later identified as Charles T. Kincaid Jr., 66, of Sebring.

An employee locked the doors to keep him from entering the bank.

Kincaid drove away from the bank in a blue Dodge pickup. Police saw the truck on 26th Street West and stopped Kincaid.

The man was cooperative at first, but suddenly pulled a gun and threatened the officers. Two officers fired at him, striking him once. He was taken to a local hospital.

Kincaid is charged with attempted bank robbery and two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

The two officers who fired at him have both been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure while their roles in the incident are investigated.
