TAMPA - A drug dealer who punched a cop who was trying to arrest him was sentenced today to 24 years and six months in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Adrian Lorenzo Thomas, 30, of Tampa, was convicted by a federal grand jury in March on charges of possessing with intent to distribute crack cocaine and cocaine. Prosecutors say Thomas, a member of the Drak street gang, received a lengthy sentence because of his history of violent crimes.
According to court documents, Thomas was arrested on March 5, 2005, after he agreed to sell crack to a confidential informant. On Dec. 8, 2006, Thomas was stopped by a Tampa police officer who found crack cocaine and nearly a pound of powder cocaine in Thomas' car.
Thomas punched the officer and ran away. He was arrested soon after.
Thomas' arrest and conviction was a part of the U.S. Department of Justice's Project Safe Neighborhoods, which seeks to reduce gang violence in 12 cities nationwide.
