TAMPA - A coalition of more than 30 privacy rights groups has asked the federal government to suspend use of whole-body imaging technology at U.S. airports.
Tampa International Airport has four units.
The Electronic Privacy Information Center and other local, state and national organizations say in the letter sent Monday that whole-body imaging systems capture a detailed image of air travelers naked.
The Transportation Security Administration discounts the claims, saying the images are blurred but can show hidden weapons. TSA observers work from a booth and cannot see the people whose images appear on a screen, and the images are not stored, the TSA has said.
EPIC's national campaign against use of the equipment includes the Web site http://privacy coalition.org/stopwholebody imaging and a Facebook group: "Stop Airport Strip Searches."
