Lisa Strong's story ("Judge says amputee jury wrong," June 1) is truly a tragedy. I can only imagine the jury couldn't agree on which of the two doctors was most responsible. But there is a process for apportionment of responsibility that should have been (and probably will be) followed.
In today's world, Lisa or her employer could choose different providers for their health insurance and/or hospital needs. The free market - Lisa and her employer, in concert with other customers - would eventually correct the problems at these two health-care institutions, or they would be out of business.
But here's a chilling thought: How likely would that correction be if either or both of the providers were the U.S. government?
