Arkansas beats FSU in opener

TALLAHASSEE - Mike Bolsinger threw five scoreless innings and Arkansas scored four of its runs without a hit to defeat Florida State 7-2 in the opener of a super regional tournament game Friday.

The game took more than nine hours to complete because of rain delays.

Florida State (45-17) must win two straight to return to the College World Series for a second straight year.

Bolsinger (6-4) fanned six and scattered four hits after replacing starter Dallas Keuchel.

The Razorbacks took a 5-2 lead in the seventh, scoring three runs without a hit as Florida State reliever Geoff Parker (6-2) of Dade City walked three and hit a batter before getting an out.

Arkansas (38-22) took advantage of three Seminoles errors in the eighth to boost its lead to 7-2.

Florida State stranded 14 runners and looked totally unlike the team that walloped Ohio State 37-6 last Sunday to advance to the super regionals.

The game, which started at noon, finished at 9:09 p.m. after three weather interruptions totaling just over six hours.

Florida State starter Sean Gilmartin, who threw 70 pitches, did not return after the third and longest delay of 4 hours, 22 minutes.

Freshman third baseman Zack Cox gave the Razorbacks a 1-0 lead in the second with his 12th homer, a towering shot over the center-field wall.

But Florida State evened the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame when Tyler Holt's single scored Tommy Oravetz.

Rain showers halted play again in the top of the fourth after Arkansas loaded the bases on sharply hit singles by Ben Tschepikow, Scott Lyons and Andy Wilkins. But they managed just one run for a 2-1 lead after play resumed when Tschepikow scored on a double-play grounder.

Florida State parlayed three singles into a run in the fifth to tie the game 2-2 on Stuart Tapley's RBI single.

Wilkins and Bo Bigham both scored in the seventh and eighth innings for Arkansas.
