Sentimental favorite Roger Federer secured his career grand slam Sunday, finally breaking through on the clay at Roland Garros to win his first French Open title and tie Pete Sampras with 14 career majors.
Playing in his fourth straight final in Paris, Federer captured the elusive crown with a 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory against Robin Soderling, the Swede who took down four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round.
With the win, his 10th without a defeat against Soderling, Federer became just the sixth man to win all four major championships, joining Andre Agassi, Don Budge, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson and Fred Perry.
