TAMPA - A 15-year-old Plant High School student remains in critical condition today after she was involved in a car crash Monday afternoon.
Ashley Simington was taken to Tampa General Hospital with head injuries after the crash at South Clark Avenue and West Vasconia Street, a Tampa Police Department report states.
Police give this account of what happened at about 5:20 p.m. Monday:
Simington was a passenger in a Toyota 4Runner driven by Jason Ryan Pyros, 16, which was going west on Vasconia. Pyros ran a stop sign at the intersection of Vasconia and South Clark and was struck on the driver's side by a Pontiac Grand Prix, according to a Tampa police report on the accident.
The Toyota struck a curb and flipped.
Simington was the only person seriously hurt in the crash and the only one to remain hospitalized, Tampa General Hospital spokeswoman Ellen Fiss said.
Charles Pyros, the father of the SUV's driver, said the sign was obscured by a large tree about 30 feet from the intersection. Pyros said his son had time to see the sign and stop but was then hit by the Grand Prix, which Pyros faults for the accident.
