In the absence of a head coach, Joe Severino was there run to the team.
After recently hired John Colbert resigned as head football coach at Chamberlain High in May, Severino, the offensive line coach, kept the players on schedule during spring workouts.
Chamberlain athletic director Richard Scionti appreciated the loyalty, and on Tuesday night, offered the former King head coach the position at Chamberlain.
"He was on the staff and he's been out there all spring," Scionti said. "He's been real loyal. He's on campus [teaching physical education] and been here a year teaching."
During stints at Gaither, Tampa Bay Tech and King, Severino compiled a 68-90 record. Severino guided King to the playoffs in 2000, where the Lions won their first and second playoff games in school history, plus another appearance in 2001.
Last season, he was an assistant coach at East Bay and joined Chamberlain in the spring.
Severino has invited former King defensive coordinator Jimmy Gee to be his coordinator at Chamberlain, and has also asked former Chamberlain linebacker and Kansas City Chief Oliver Hoyte to join his staff.
Severino inherits a program that reached the Class 5A region championship the last two years. In 2008, the Chiefs went 11-2 and lost to Lakeland in the region final.
However, several key players have transferred from Chamberlain since longtime coach Billy Turner retired months ago, which include standout defensive linemen James Wilder Jr. going to Plant and Eric Hammond to Hillsborough.
Still, Severino is confident Chamberlain will have enough talent to compete in the fall.
"We have some good kids over here," he said. "We were real thin in the spring, so we have to develop some depth. More and more kids have been showing up and we have some nice freshmen coming in."
