Diamondbacks pick Schuster in 13th round

NEW PORT RICHEY – The call finally came for Mitchell pitcher Patrick Schuster. And it was quite a bit later than expected.

While some draft experts had Schuster being drafted as high as the third round, the Arizona Diamondbacks made Schuster their 13th-round selection Wednesday during the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"My mindset is on golf right now," Schuster said when reached by phone. "I'm on the golf course right now."

When the golf outing is over, the left-hander will have some decisions to make. Schuster, who was 8-1 with an 0.93 ERA and 115 strikeouts this past season, has signed a college letter-of-intent with the University of Florida and will have to weigh his options between pro baseball and college.

"I definitely went a little lower than I thought I would," said Schuster, who found himself in the national spotlight when he threw four consecutive no-hitters toward the end of the season. "Florida definitely looks attractive after being drafted in the 13th round. With the money I'm looking at now, [Florida] looks good."

Schuster was the 396th player selected. He was the 18th high school left-handed pitcher and 62nd overall left-hander drafted.
