In budget math, workers add up

TAMPA - Hillsborough County commissioners are considering layoffs as they try to close a budget deficit of $140 million.

Here's a profile of county workers, based on salary information obtained by the Tribune in January. It includes employees with independent organizations that run the airport, port and expressway authorities.

How many people are working for Hillsborough County?

12,167 all told, of whom 11,105 are full-time workers, 334 are part-time and 728 are temporary

How many of those employees make more than $100,000?

303. Nine make more than $200,000 a year, of whom four work for authorities run by boards separate from the elected Hillsborough County Commission.

What's the breakdown on pay for other county jobs?
The median income is $42,894. Here's how many employees fall within designated pay ranges:

•$0-$29,000, 2,913;

•$30,000-$39,999, 3,034;

•$40,000-$69,999, 4,751;

•$70,000-$99,000, 2,450;

•$100,000-$149,000, 264;

•$150,000 and above, 39

Who are the lowest-paid Hillsborough County workers?

Forty-seven full-time county laborers make about minimum wage, or $14,123

Which county department has the most employees?

More than 1 in 4 employees work with the sheriff's office - 3,336 of them. Other large departments include the circuit court clerk with 918, fire-rescue with 852 and water resource services with 659.

How long have most workers been employed by the county?

Three-fourths of county employees, or 9,110 of them, have worked there at least three years. Workers with at least five years number 7,086; at least 10 years, 4,965; and at least 20 years, 2,152. Seven people have worked with the county since the 1960s.

How diverse is the work force of Hillsborough County?

The proportion of white people working for the county is higher than in the county's population, 63 percent versus 58 percent. Other comparisons of county employees and the county's population: blacks, 19 percent versus 17 percent; Hispanics, 15 percent versus 22 percent; Asians, 2 percent versus 3 percent; and women, 51 percent versus 44 percent.
