SPRING HILL - A 22-year-old Spring Hill man was charged today in the shooting death of his 24-year-old brother.
Christopher Michael Gorski died from gunshot wounds Wednesday night.
David Paul Gorski was charged with manslaughter and is being held with no bail set.
Christopher Gorski got into a fight with his mother, Pamela Gorski, 48, and hit her at their home about 7 p.m. Wednesday, Hernando County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Donna Black said.
David Gorski verbally intervened and drew his brother's attention. When Christopher Gorski began walking toward his brother, David Gorski pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired, Black said. Christopher Gorski, who would have turned 25 on Saturday, was shot four times in the torso and died about three hours later, Black said.
The mother and brothers lived together at 11358 Corrigan St., Black said.
As crime scene investigators processed the scene today, a longtime Gorski family friend said the family is devastated.
"They are good people, hard working, very respectful," Richard Ballenger said. "I have the grandmother in the car. This is very, very hard on the family - from sisters, brothers, everyone - and we are waiting now to see exactly what the sheriff's department is going to come up with. And we are just going to put out faith in God."
The brothers, Ballenger said, "were good kids."
"Of course, kids fight, you know, like we did when we were younger," he said. "But [David] looked up to [Chris] and wanted [Chris] to excel. And some things just didn't go quite right."
Two days before the shooting, Pamela Gorski asked a neighbor, Ray Corrigan, to "keep an eye on the house," Corrigan recalled Thursday morning.
"She said if I heard any shouting to call the police," Corrigan said from his living room, still shocked by the shooting.
He wasn't exactly sure what prompted Pam Gorski to give her warning, but he surmised it had to with Christopher Gorski's tendency to get "wound up" when he was mad. "He gets crazy," Corrigan said.
Generally, though, any arguments were between Christopher Gorski and his girlfriend, Corrigan said.
Corrigan called the shooting "a shame."
"They are good people," he said about his neighbors.
