TAMPA - A search for a gunman on the University of South Florida campus has yielded no suspect after more than an hour of searching.
The man was reportedly seen on the east side of campus near the Greek Village, officials say.
There have been no reports of shots fired. No school buildings have been locked down and the campus was not evacuated, USF spokesman Michael Hoad said.
USF sent text message alerts to students and faculty and posted the alerts on its Web site. Video screens on campus are also flashed the same message.
A caller notified police this afternoon that a white man between 18-20 years old and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans was seen near 56th Street carrying a handgun, USF police spokeswoman Lt. Meg Ross said.
The shirt had the words "Go Greek" on it, Ross said.
The Tampa Police Department and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office are helping with the search.
It is against university rules to have a gun on campus, Hoad said.
