Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday were warning drivers who were not wearing seat belts about an important change in the law at the end of the month.
Beginning June 30, law enforcement officials can stop drivers if they see that the driver or front seat passenger is not buckled up. Police now can ticket an unbelted driver only when the motorist is stopped for another infraction.
The law is intended to reduce fatalities and injuries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than half the people killed in crashes each year are not wearing seat belts.
