TAMPA - Traffic is now clear on Broadway Avenue after a multicar collision this morning.
Tampa police are handling the crash, which happened just after 6 a.m. at Broadway Avenue and 70th Street.
The crash involved a tanker truck, an SUV and a white passenger van transporting eight work-release inmates.
A preliminary investigation by the Tampa Police Department has determined that a red Saturn driven east on Broadway by a woman in her 20s crossed the center line and hit the westbound van. The Saturn's driver, whose name has not been released, was taken to Tampa General Hospital and is in critical, but stable, condition.
The driver of the van carrying the inmates sustained minor injuries, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
The inmates are mostly in jail for violations of probation, according to the sheriff's office. They were on work-release for road cleanup and other duties. All the inmates were accounted for and transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
The inmates were being transported from the nearby Orient Road Jail to a work detail.
Reports on other injuries or damage were not immediately available.
