Sunday is World Blood Donor Day, and this year organizers want to raise the profile of the most important part of the lifesaving operation: volunteers.
Anyone visiting a Florida Blood Services location or bloodmobile from Monday to June 21 will receive a bandage recognizing their service. Nexcare has created a limited edition "GIVE" bandage that allows donors to carry their message beyond the blood bank walls. Donors also will get a certificate good for a Dairy Queen Blizzard.
Florida Blood Services is the area's largest blood bank, serving 37 local hospitals. A few facts:
•Locally, an estimated 110,000 people 16 and older roll up their sleeves each year to donate one of the four blood cell types: A, B, AB and O.
•Although 37 percent of Americans are eligible to give, the number of donors reflects less than 10 percent of the population.
•43,000 pints are used every day in North America.
•Every year, 5 million Americans receive blood.
