Youssef Megahed is, very simply, a guest in this country. That is a privilege we grant at our discretion. That he was found not guilty in his trial does not qualify him for special favor.
He and his associate, Ahmed Mohamed, were apprehended in 2007 on a road trip in South Carolina with explosive devices in the trunk of their car. Mohamed was convicted on federal charges and is now serving 15 years. He had posted a video describing how to make a remote-controlled explosive device.
The FBI found Megahed's personal computer had repeatedly accessed radical Islamist Web sites and those with detailed bomb-making instructions.
The government is accused of using different standards than those at his recent criminal trial to judge Megahed for deportation, and the article ("Megahed sees victory in the end," June 6) suggests this is entirely unfair. The standards are different, but it is entirely logical they should be. He should not be allowed to continue to reside in this country.
