If you see lots of Stars and Stripes flying today, there's a good reason.
It's the birthday of the U.S. flag, proposed by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
But the day has been celebrated nationally for only 60 years, after President Harry S. Truman proclaimed the day in honor of Old Glory.
The first official observation of the day was in Philadelphia in 1893, but the movement was slow to gain momentum nationwide because it was so close to Memorial Day and July Fourth.
