LAKELAND - A 48-year-old Orlando woman was killed Sunday afternoon in a two-car crash that also sent three of her passengers to area hospitals.
Shortly after noon, Sandra Nanette Alvarez was driving her 2002 Suzuki Sidekick west on Interstate 4 in the inside lane approaching County Road 35A when her SUV apparently blew out a tire, a report states.
Alvarez lost control, turning clockwise and striking a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta also traveling westbound. Alvarez's vehicle spun around again after colliding with the Jetta's left front side and overturned, according to the report.
Joshua Kenneth Ciaramitaro, the driver of the Jetta, wasn't injured, nor was his passenger.
Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene by Polk County paramedics. Her passenger Ruth Rivera, 20, also of Orlando was in serious condition at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Two children, Victor Antonetty, 5 months, and Justin Griffin, 1, were flown by medical helicopter to Tampa General Hospital and were both in serious condition Sunday evening.
