ST. PETERSBURG - The man struck by a St. Petersburg Police squad car Friday night has been identified as Terry W. Barnes, 24, of New Haven, Conn., St. Petersburg police said this morning.
Barnes was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries after the 11 p.m. accident, and remained there this morning in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Barnes was running across 34th Street when he was struck by a police car driven by Officer Steven Pugh, police have said. Pugh was responding to a call for service but was not operating in emergency mode.
The officer tried to swerve to the left to avoid Barnes, but the right corner of his squad car struck him, throwing him into the driveway of a bar, police said. Barnes was staying at a motel with a friend, police said.
