Lakeland police investigate possible sexual assault of 4-year-old

Lakeland police are investigating whether a 4-year-old girl was molested while playing at a public park.

The girl was playing inside a tube slide with an older child Friday at Common Ground Park, 1000 E. Edgewood Drive in Lakeland, police spokesman Jack Gillen said. When she emerged from the slide, her shorts were pulled down and her underwear was on backward, Gillen said.

The older child told the girl's mother that he had been dropped off at the park by his parents. The boy then fled the park.

Police said the boy was between 10 and 13 years old and about 5 feet tall, with a thin build and short blond hair.
