ODESSA - An 18-month-old boy died this morning from what authorities say is an apparent drowning in a partially drained pool.
Hillsborough County sheriff's Deputy Matthew Carter had just completed an unrelated emergency call in Odessa when he was flagged down by a resident who told him there was a baby in distress.
Carter went to a home at 17201 Equestrian Trail and saw the toddler in the front yard of a neighbor's house. Carter performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The child was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where he died, the sheriff's office said.
Investigators say the boy had wandered out of the kitchen, onto the patio and fell into his family's partially drained pool. The child's disappearance may have gone unnoticed for up to 10 minutes. The boy's mother had pulled him out of the pool.
Detectives have ruled the death an accident.
