TAMPA - Commuters across the country are being encouraged to ditch their cars for a bike or bus Thursday.
National "Dump The Pump" day is the American Public Transportation Association's way of promoting mass transit or greener forms of moving to and from work.
The organization estimates individual Americans can save more than $8,000 a year by riding public transportation and living with one less car. Carbon emissions are reduced, along with an estimated 900,000 tanks of gas each day by switching.
Commuters seriously thinking of reducing their travel to two wheels can find out how cycling would affect their pocketbook. Personal finance company Kiplinger's has created a "How Much Can I Save Bicycling To Work" calculator at http://kiplinger.com/tools/bike.
Input daily mileage and toll costs, and the database will determine potential daily savings. For example, a Brandon commuter driving 30 miles round trip every day, and with $3.50 in tolls to downtown Tampa, would save $17.37 each day.
The American Public Transportation Association's Web site has a comparable calculator to estimate savings from riding public transportation: http://publictransportation.org/contact/stories/ca....
