MIAMI - Miami-Dade officials have decided to name a new high school after former NBA star Alonzo Mourning.
The Miami-Dade School Board voted today to name the new North Miami school after Mourning, rather than former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.
A naming committee had settled on the Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School Biscayne Bay Campus, but the school board had to make the final call.
Mourning was a star when he played for the Miami Heat.
Reno was the longtime Miami-Dade state attorney before becoming the country's first female attorney general. Many in South Florida's large Cuban-American population disagree with her order to return 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez to his father in Cuba in 2000.
