TAMPA - University of South Florida junior guard Dominique Jones did not make the 12-member team that will represent the USA in the 2009 World University Games, July 2-11 in Belgrade, Serbia.
The player selections were made by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee, chaired by Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. Jones was among 16 players competing for spots on the 12-man squad.
"It was one of the most difficult decisions we as a committee have had because the team is so balanced," Boeheim said in a statement. "It's probably one of the better groups of wing players we have had and all the guys are great players. It looks to be one of our most competitive teams for the World University Games. We have good shooters and athletic wing guys, which gives this team a good chance to compete."
Named to the 2009 USA Men's World University Games Team were: Oklahoma State's James Anderson, Penn State's Talor Battle, Clemson's Trevor Booker, Iowa State's Craig Brackins, West Virginia's Da'Sean Butler, Villanova's Corey Fisher, Marquette's Lazar Hayward, Purdue's Robbie Hummel, Washington's Quincy Pondexter, North Carolina's Deon Thompson, Ohio State's Evan Turner and Mississippi State's Jarvis Varnado.
University of Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan was selected coach of the 2009 USA Men's World University Games Team. Miami's Frank Haith and Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Rob Jeter are serving as assistant coaches.
"First of all, all 16 players at trials are very good players," Ryan said in a statement. "Everybody that competed worked very hard against one another at a very high level. The toughest part was getting down to the 12 players."
