Rays' Upton wins A.L. Player of the Week award

Tampa Bay Rays center fielder B.J. Upton has been named the American League Player of the Week after hitting .429 with three doubles, two home runs and an A.L.-best nine RBI.

In six games last week Upton posted a .750 slugging percentage along with a .448 on-base percentage. He also stole two bases and his 26 steals rank third in the American League.

Upton capped his productive week on Sunday, when he went 4-for-6 with a career-high four RBIs in the Rays' 10-6 win over the New York Mets.

Upton, who struggled badly at the start of the year after having surgery on his left shoulder during the offseason, raised his batting average to .240 on the season, an increase of 28 points in the last nine games. His average jumped 10 points on Sunday alone.

Upton has won the player of the week award one other time, with the first coming for his play during the week ending July 23, 2007.
