TALLAHASSEE - The recreational harvest season for bay scallops opens July 1 from the west bank of the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County to the Pasco-Hernando County line near Aripeka.
Harvesters can take bay scallops only within specified harvest areas and it is illegal to possess bay scallops in or on state waters outside the harvest areas or to land bay scallops outside the open areas.
There is a daily bag limit of two gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell or one pint of meat. No more than 10 gallons in the shell of one-half gallon of meat can be aboard any one vehicle at a time, according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Scallops can only be harvested by hand or with a dipping net and they can only be harvested recreationally.
All harvesters must hold a regular Florida saltwater fishing license.
