TAMPA - Alumni from Middleton High will gather in Tampa this weekend to celebrate the school's 75th anniversary.
For some, however, the celebration has been dimmed by news of the school's academic predicament.
Last week, the state released its report card for public education and gave Middleton High a D for the sixth consecutive year. That will keep it on a state list of schools requiring "intervention," which means the school district could force any number of changes, including a restructuring of Middleton's staff.
Some alumni "are just shaking their heads," said Fred Hearns, a 1966 Middleton graduate and past president of the school's alumni association.
Nevertheless, events are scheduled for Thursday through Sunday to celebrate the All-Class Reunion.
The school was founded in 1934 and named after business and civic leader George S. Middleton.
On Thursday morning, Mayor Pam Iorio is scheduled to issue a proclamation honoring the school. A bus tour will leave the school Friday morning.
A scholarship banquet and dance will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at Doubletree Hotel on West Cypress Street in Tampa.
Finally, alumni will gather for a picnic from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Rowlett Park.
