With the economic downturn causing a decrease in donations, endowments and government funding, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center announced today its decision to lay off 20 employees.

"This is strictly a business decision," said Michael Kilgore, the vice president of marketing for the performing arts center. "This is a restructuring and reorganization of how we do business."

The cuts affected employees at all levels and departments, including the Patel Conservatory, Kilgore said. The TBPAC still employs 120 people. The layoffs were announced to staff today, Kilgore said.

"We are still fiscally strong and committed to providing the best performing arts and the best performing arts training," Kilgore said.

The 335,000-square foot performing arts center opened in 1987. More than 680,000 people attended 4,148 events during TBPAC's 2007-08 season, according to the center's Web site.
