Palmetto great-grandmother charged in child's beating

MANATEE COUNTY - A great-grandmother faces child neglect charges after whipping a child with a cable cord, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.
Theresa Wilkerson, 57, of Palmetto, struck the child with the cord after she said the child disrespected her just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, a sheriff deputy's report said.
The child was arguing with a friend in Wilkerson's home in the 1500 block of 72nd Street East when Wilkerson approached the child. According to the report, Wilkerson struck the child twice in a chopping motion.
Wilkerson works for the Shining Light Church of God in Christ in Palmetto.
