Sarasota County sheriff's deputies have arrested one person in connection to this morning's slaying of a man and a woman in a rural area of Venice.
David Myers, 67, of 837 Poincianna Road, Venice, has been charged with first degree murder.
The bodies were discovered about 10:40 a.m. at 3063 Kennedy Drive when a neighbor called deputies to report a trespasser, sheriff's spokeswoman Wendy Rose said. The names of the victims have not been released because relatives haven't been notified.
This is what happened, according to a sheriff's office arrest report:
The neighbor told deputies that he saw Myers driving a truck owned by one of the victims to a wooded area on the Kennedy Drive property. The neighbor knew that Myers should not be on the property and called the sheriff's office.
When deputies arrived, Myers told them he owned the property and that he had evicted the man and the woman. Deputies checked the area and found the victims' bodies in the woods near where Myers parked the truck.
The victims died of gunshot wounds, according to investigators.
The neighbor who called the sheriff's office told deputies that Myers and the woman had once been in a relationship. The woman had told the neighbor recently that there is a legal dispute concerning who owns the Kennedy Drive property, deputies say.
