Three people were seriously hurt Sunday night after a driver speeding on Interstate 4 near Plant City struck their vehicle while changing lanes, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Laura Waiters, 36, and passengers Angella Humphrey, 32, and Thedis Wilburn, 55, all of Tampa, were taken to Tampa General Hospital. They were listed in serious condition Sunday night.
A 7-year-old girl in Waiters' car was not hurt.
This is what happened about 5:50 p.m. on westbound I-4 near the State Road 39 exit, according to the highway patrol:
Kyrie Lynn Fitzgerald, 20, of Largo, was speeding and changing lanes in and out of traffic when she passed Waiters, who was driving a 2001 Toyota car. Fitzgerald went into the Toyota's lane and the front of her 2007 Mitsubishi coupe struck the rear of Waiters' car.
Waiters lost control and the Toyota started spinning across all three westbound lanes of the highway then crashed into a concrete barrier wall. Fitzgerald's car also spun out of control and stopped on the outside lane.
The crash shut down all lanes of westbound I-4 for about one hour.
Fitzgerald, who was not hurt in the crash, received a citation for failure to use due care. All three women were wearing seatbelts, according to a highway patrol report.
