On June 19, The Tampa Tribune reported on faculty salaries at the University of South Florida's College of Medicine. I noticed that Dr. Neil Fenske, chairman of Dermatology, was cited as being highly compensated.
As a student and volunteer research assistant at the college, I see that not only are there huge differences in physician recognition, but there is ample reason for it.
Fenske is a world-class dermatologist and has changed the way that we view aging skin.
The university needs such internationally renowned faculty as Fenske to attract national prominence.
Focusing on salaries rather than scientific contribution and quality of teaching demonstrates a lack of insight into how a medical school can achieve greatness.
We need minds like Fenske and Dr. Steve Klasko, also mentioned in the article, to forge the College of Medicine into a cutting edge and progressive institution.
