A suspicious fire broke out this morning in an unoccupied house, according to St. Petersburg fire officials.
The blaze at 3090 15th Ave. S. was reported shortly after 5 a.m., said Lt. Joel Granata of St Petersburg Fire and Rescue.
Firefighters, thinking there might be people inside when they arrived, went in but found no one, Granata said. The home's residents were elsewhere, he said.
The fire, which appears to be suspicious in nature, started in a back bedroom and vented through the roof, Granata said. It was brought under control in under 20 minutes and no one was injured, he said.
Damage to the 1,550-square-foot home is estimated at roughly $60,000, Granata said. The house is valued at $148,000.
Though the fire appears to have been intentionally set, a final determination as to what started it has not yet been made, Granata said.
