Former Tampa Prep and University of Georgia diving star Chris Colwill has been selected to be the flag bearer for the U.S. delegation competing in next month's FINA World Championships in Rome.

"It's definitely a big honor," Colwill said from his training base in Athens, Ga. "I've never been in that situation before, representing my country by carrying the flag at an international competition."

Colwill will carry the U.S. flag during opening ceremonies of the 13th FINA World Championships, July 17-Aug. 2 in Rome. As flag bearer, Colwill will be representing the United States for all four aquatics disciplines - diving, swimming, water polo and open water swimming.

Colwill was chosen to carry the flag by a USA Diving panel of selectors, which was composed of officials, coaches and former divers.

Colwill, who finished fourth in synchronized diving at last summer's Beijing Olympic Games, made the world championships squad in two individual diving events, 1-meter and 3-meter springboard.

He and synchro partner Jevon Tarantino were edged out by Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen for the lone 3-meter synchro spot.
