The Tampa Tribune was among the top award winners in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors contest, with six Top 10 finishes.
Remember the stunning picture of Dick Vitale in a Cinderella dress on the cover of the Tribune's NCAA basketball preview section? That section placed in the Top 10 for Special Sections. The Tribune also took Top 10 honors for its Sunday sports section for the third year in a row.
Martin Fennelly and Joe Henderson both finished in the Top 10 in column writing for the third year in a row. Among Fennelly's pieces were a column on the end of Brandon wrestling's remarkable winning streak, and one on the retirement of Bucs fans' beloved A-Train, Mike Alstott. Henderson's entries included a column on grieving kicker Matt Bryant helping the Bucs win days after his young son's death, and one on how foolish the Lightning looked for the hiring/firing of Barry Melrose.
Brett McMurphy placed in the Top 10 in breaking news for his story on USF linebacker Ben Moffitt, whose wife said she wrote nearly every paper for him during his five years at the school.
The team of Joe Henderson, Joey Johnston, Ira Kaufman, Nick Williams, Anwar Richardson and Bill Ward took Top 10 honors in the explanatory category for their package delving into the murky world of college basketball recruiting.
Overall, the Tribune tied the Palm Beach Post for most Top 10 honors in the 100,000-250,000 circulation category for the second year in a row.
