GAINESVILLE - A Jacksonville couple is donating $21 million to the University of Florida's Shands Cancer Center.
The university says the gift is the single largest donation made to the College of Medicine. It will be used to support teaching, research and programs in cancer, with an emphasis on lymphoma, breast cancer, bone marrow and gastrointestinal cancer.
Jerry and Judy Davis also donated $1 million to the new Shands at UF Cancer Hospital. Eleven years ago they donated $5 million to the university's cancer research programs. Both are cancer survivors.
Jerry Davis is a private investor and 1968 graduate of the College of Journalism and Communications. He and his wife serve as co-chairs of the Shands cancer hospital fundraising effort.
