Ransom Pitches Berkeley Prep To Win

Published: March 2, 2009

SPRING HILL - The 2009 baseball season has been one of change for Berkeley Prep junior Garrett Ransom. But the changes Bucs coach Mike Friedlein has asked Ransom to make have paid large dividends early in the season.

The left-handed Ransom recorded his second complete-game victory with a 10-0 five-inning win against host Bishop McLaughlin on Monday.

"When the season started we asked a lot out of him," Friedlein said. "We moved him from the leadoff spot to the three hole and we moved him from a short, spot relief role to a guy we're really going to rely on come district time and in some of these big games."

Ransom has responded. After tossing a four-hit complete game against Indian Rocks Christian on Feb. 23, which the Bucs (5-1) won 7-1, he only allowed three hits against the Hurricanes (3-2) in his latest outing.

Ransom, who also got a win in relief last week against Tampa Prep, saw his ERA drop to 1.58 in 172/3 innings.

He's also responding with the bat. Ransom, No. 4 hitter Tony Pikos and No. 5 Destin Nichols were 6-for-8 with three doubles and six RBIs. Their spots - using designated runners - also scored five runs.

Bishop McLaughlin (3-2) had to scratch starting pitcher Brian Holland hours before game time because of a high fever. All six Berkeley runs scored in the second inning were unearned as the Hurricanes committed three errors.
