CLEARWATER - Police have released the name of the Clearwater man they shot and killed while investigating a domestic violence call Monday night.
He is Michael Gaides, 52, of 1200 S. Missouri Ave.
Two officers went to Unit 129 of the Lexington Apartments, 1200 S. Missouri Ave., at 10:48 p.m., in response to a report of domestic violence, according to a news release from Clearwater police.
During the investigation, a confrontation between the officers and Gaides turned violent, investigators say.
"The officers located the suspect in his room, and a verbal exchange ensued through the closed door," a news release states. "When officers opened the door, the suspect fired at them. Both officers returned fire, striking the suspect at least once."
Gaides was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:34 p.m.
Several guns were found in Gaides' bedroom, according to the news release.
Officers Scott Durivou and Eliad Glenn were placed on administrative leave with pay while authorities investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure.
Agencies involved in the investigation are the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office and the Clearwater Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division and Office of Professional Standards.
