ST. PETERSBURG - A jury has found a southwest Florida man guilty of killing a young couple and leaving behind their toddler with the bodies.
Fred Dewitt Cooper Jr. was convicted today of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of armed burglary. A Fort Myers jury failed to reach a verdict after 30 hours of deliberations this past fall, so a second trial was moved to Pinellas County.
Authorities said the Bonita Springs man murdered Michelle and Steven Andrews in December 2005. Investigators said Steven Andrews was having an affair with the mother of Cooper's daughter.
The case received widespread attention because the couple's 2-year-old was heard calling for his mother on a 911 call that brought deputies to the scene. The child was unharmed.
