Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies continue to search for a burglary suspect after he and an accomplice broke into a Lutz home this morning.
Marquis Jamal White, 25, was arrested after deputies pursued him and another man through the Lutz area, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. White was charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of petty theft.
The other man got away during a foot chase, Carter said. The man is described as black with a medium build and dreadlocks. He is in his 20's and was last seen wearing a red shirt.
Deputies give this account of what happened at 2617 Derby Glen Drive, Lutz, about 10 a.m.:
White was a passenger in a green Honda 4-door car. He and the driver were pulling out of the apartment complex as deputies arrived. Stop-sticks were deployed, but the Honda managed to go around them.
The driver of the Honda lost control of the car, struck a vehicle parked in front of a home and a chain-link fence. White and the driver get out the Honda, running away in different directions.
The driver found a pickup truck with an attached trailer that had the keys in the ignition. The man took the truck and drove toward Livingston and Bearss avenues. He drove east in the westbound lanes, where he hit a vehicle and kept going. The collision caused two other vehicles to crash on Bearss.
The man drove to University Community Hospital on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Fletcher Avenue where he abandoned the truck. He was last seen in the area of Bruce B. Downs and East 138th Avenue.
About 20 minutes after the men ran off on foot, White was seen near East 148th and 20th streets. He took clothing from a home on North 24th Street and ran. The owner of the home saw him and called the sheriff's office. White was arrested shortly after.
White was charged with two counts of burglary, grand theft, petty theft, opposing a law enforcement officer without violence and possession of marijuana. He is being held tonight on $18,750 bail at Orient Road Jail.
