Rescued Poodle Happy To Head Home

Henry, a standard poodle rescued last year from a filthy garage, has left the Hillsborough County animal shelter and gone home with his new owner.

Miriam Faircloth, a retired nurse from South Tampa, picked up her new companion today.

Henry was one of 87 animals rescued last year from a home in Lithia. The garage in which they were kept was filled with feces, sawdust and decaying carcasses - so filthy that rescuers called it a dungeon.

Henry has gained 20 pounds since his rescue. He and 27 other dogs at the shelter became available for adoption Friday. The smaller-breed dogs rescued along with him were all adopted before him, so Hillsborough County Animal Services put the word out to local media that Henry still needed a home.

"The most abused of the bunch was the last to be selected, but perhaps he's the most special," spokeswoman Marti Ryan said.

Faircloth was first in line to fill out an application.
