ST. PETERSBURG - A jury has recommend that a southwest Florida man spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a young couple and leaving behind their toddler with the bodies.
The Pinellas jury made its recommendation today, two days after finding Fred Dewitt Cooper Jr. guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of armed burglary. Cooper's formal sentencing is scheduled for March 16.
Authorities said the Bonita Springs man murdered Michelle and Steven Andrews in December 2005. Investigators said Steven Andrews was having an affair with the mother of Cooper's daughter.
The case received widespread attention because the couple's 2-year-old was heard calling for his mother on a 911 call that brought deputies to the scene. The child was unharmed.
