Poverty Discussed At USF Session
TAMPA - Is it possible to end poverty?
University of South Florida students and faculty will gather today to explore that question with Pennsylvania State University professor Lakshman Yapa.
Yapa will discuss the Philadelphia Urban Poverty Project, an example of an unconventional approach to finding answers to the problem of poverty.
"We believe our academic community, which is very engaged in the Tampa Bay community, will find inspiration and practical ideas from the work being done by Dr. Yapa and his colleagues," said USF geography department chairman Robert Brinkmann. "We're very excited about this discussion, which is very much on everyone's minds these days," he said.
The session starts at 1:15 p.m. in the USF chemistry building's Room 217. It is free and open to the public.

Pasco Schools Face More Cuts
LAND O' LAKES - This year's budget cuts for Pasco County schools could pale in comparison to what's in store for 2009-10.
The school district is estimating it may need to cut $72.7 million from its general fund in the coming fiscal year.
The federal stimulus package and a proposed change in the use of some capital funds could temper that somewhat, but the district still is anticipating a shortfall of $37.8 million in 2009-10.
Much of the planning for the coming fiscal year is up in the air because details about the use of the stimulus money won't be known until April. Also, throughout this year, revenue numbers coming out of Tallahassee have changed several times, so district officials are wary of putting too much stock in the numbers too soon.
"Whatever I say today probably will change tomorrow," Olga Swinson, the district's chief finance officer, told school board members at a budget workshop this week.
