A life vest, also known as a Personal Flotation Device, is one of the most vital pieces of safety equipment a boater should have. There is a wide variety of types, including foam and inflatable. The most advanced are designed to keep the wearer's head out of the water, even if unconscious. Marine officials strongly urge boaters to wear a life vest at all times. All boats are required to keep at least one life vest per person on board at all times.
