Buoyant life rings are used primarily to help rescue someone who has fallen overboard. A rope often is attached to help bring the person back to the boat.
All boats 16 feet and longer, except for canoes and kayaks, are required to carry some sort of throwable flotation device. An important safety consideration is making sure to stow the device somewhere where it is immediately accessible in an emergency.
