NEW PORT RICHEY - The Class 6A-District 7 battle between undefeated Alonso and Mitchell was scheduled to be a matchup of two of the better pitchers in the area.
Illness kept Mitchell ace Patrick Schuster from taking the mound, but the Ravens' Thomas Dorminy did. Dorminy didn't get the victory but played a big part in Alonso's 5-3 win Thursday night at Mitchell.
The junior left-hander struck out eight in 4 1/3 innings but was relieved when his pitch count reached 96. Dorminy, who has 25 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings, scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth after leading off the inning with a double. Casey Smit, who hit a two-run homer in the third, was credited with a single on a sacrifice attempt when Mitchell (7-1) left first base uncovered. Dorminy scored on a wild pitch.
"Those guys in the middle of the lineup have been swinging the bat for us," Alonso coach Landy Faedo said.
Alonso (6-0) scored an unearned run in the first and led 3-0 after Smit's home run. But Mitchell came back in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer by Matt Hart that cleared the center-field fence (380 feet) and bounced off the roof of a parked trailer.
After Dorminy walked two batters in the bottom of the fifth he was replaced by Jordan Huchro, and Hart greeted him with a double to score Steve Brown and tie the score at 3. Dorminy, who had moved to right field, prevented further damage with a diving catch to end the inning.
Jose Fernandez (2-0) relieved Huchro in the sixth and struck out six of the seven batters he faced. Hart (0-1) was the loser in relief.
Pasco Routs Nature Coast 11-1
DADE CITY - It took two innings, but Pasco finally figured out tricky Nature Coast starter Mike Adams en route to an 11-1 win.
Third baseman Brennan Allen led the Pirates' offense with a three-run double in the third off Adams and the second of back-to-back homers in the sixth, which was effectively a walk-off with the mercy rule. Jorge Jaramillo also homered for Pasco (6-1, 5-0 Class 4A-District 8), while Cole Stancil went 3-for-4 and Josh Johnson had two runs and two RBIs.
"We know Adams throws off-speed stuff, so we were going to sit back and take the base hits," Allen said.
Kevin Gude (1-0) got the win, and Pasco's bullpen threw 22/3 hitless innings. Nature Coast (3-2, 2-1) had only two hits.
